Grand Canyon National Park Arizona is becoming a growing force in the biotechnology and life science industry. The Grand Canyon State offers a range of resources from organizations, universities, and companies to foster the state’s bioscience growth.

Arizona hosts numerous biotechnology and life science companies within its borders. Among these are Acenta Discovery, Inc. in Tucson; PAR Analytical in Tucson; InNexus Biotechnology, Inc. in Scottsdale; Byron Medical, Inc. in Tucson; High Throughput Genomics in Tucson; Human Biologics International in Scottsdale; Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation in Scottsdale; Zila, Inc. in Phoenix; BioImmune, Inc. in Scottsdale; GenoSensor Corporation in Tempe; and Protein Therapeutics, Inc., among several others.

Arizona touts several organizations designed to develop and further the life science industry. The Arizona BioIndustry Association (ABA) is a non-profit association whose goal is to promote the growth of bioscience industries in Arizona; it is a member of the national Biotechnology Industry Organization. The Bioindustry Organization of Southern Arizona (BIO-SA) represents the Tucson area by supporting the creation, operation, and expansion of biotech enterprise and the commercialization of university research institute-based technologies. The Flinn Foundation is a privately endowed grantmaking organization created for improving the quality of life in Arizona. The Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations in the state, particularly for encouraging competition in the state’s biomedical research arena.

Arizona’s educational institutions participate in ground-breaking, collaborative research throughout the state. The University of Arizona offers numerous research centers including the Arizona Research Laboratories, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration for initiating new research and educational programs important to the scientific community. At Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, numerous opportunities for clinical research exist. At Arizona State University, the Biodesign Research Institute merges such fields of study as biology, physics, agriculture, and materials science, among others, toward the goal of preventing and curing disease and ensuring a safer world.

Other research institutions comprise the flourishing biotechnology and life science industry of the Grand Canyon State. The Critical Path Institute (C-Path) in Tucson was created to support the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in implementing the Critical Path Initiative, and to develop innovative collaborative projects in research and education to ensure safe acceleration of medical product development. The Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix is a non-profit organization focused on developing earlier diagnostics and targeted treatments based on translational genomics research. Important research occurs at the Arizona Cancer Center, designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute, and the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale.

With its abundant resources available for collaborative innovation and research, Arizona promises continued success within the biotechnology industry.
